Boyd
Rollins did us PROUD, taking GOLD medals in both the 1500m and 5k racewalks at
the National Senior Games in Stanford, CA.
Here's an article from a local seniors magazine highlighting his amazing accomplishments:
After winning his age group 1500 meter racewalking race at the Huntsman Senior Games at St George, UT in 2008 Boyd Rollins of Provo, UT qualified for the US National Senior Games in August 8-10, 2009 in the San Francisco Bay area. He entered both the 1500 meter and 5K racewalking events held on the Stanford University campus. Among 13 age group (80+ years) competitors he won the gold medal in both races. His time for the 5K was 35 minutes & 14 seconds, and the 1500 meters in 10 minutes & 7 seconds (missed the national record by only 3 seconds).
Boyd has always been an avid runner, excelling in track in high school and college in the mile run. He was a regular participant at the Huntsman Senior Games from 1987 to 1992, usually winning the 800 meter run or the 5K or both. In 1992 an accident severely injured his back ending his running career. Finally after a successful back surgery in 2002 he took up extensive walking to rehabilitate his back. Unable to get back to competitive running he started competitive racewalking.
Racewalking not only requires speed but a specific gait in which one foot must be in contact with the ground at all times and the knee must be perfectly straight from the time the heel of the foot hits the ground until the knee is vertical with the torso. An incorrect gait results in disqualification if 3 judges notice an infraction. Boyd got disqualified for a “bent knee” for several of his first competitive races. With the help of a certified racewalking coach and the Utah based Wasatch Walkers racewalking club he now is competing well at the national level.
Though he wishes he could still run, racewalking is much easier on the knee and hip joints and a good alternative for elderly persons who still want to compete.

Race Report: "I did the 5K Freedom Run in Provo on the 4th of July. There
were 2018 finishers. I was 3rd out of 6 males 70+. The other 5 ran and I
racewalked. My chip time was 35:33. It was a tough course with the last mile up
hill. I was only 4 seconds over the National Seniors age group record
established in 1991. Looking forward to the National Senior Games in Aug." -
Boyd

And our finish times - name, handicap time, actual finish time, handicap place
(note that we were ALL slower than our handicap times --- the conditions were
not favorable and many of us were tired from the SLC marathon last weekend)
Tammy - 28:36, 29:50, 1st (1:14 slower than handicap time)
Boyd - 34:24, 35:50, 2nd (1:26 slower than handicap time; 0:12 behind leader)
Nancy 35:37, 37:40, 3rd (2:03 slower than handicap time; 0:48 behind leader)
Cindy 37:44, 39:49*, 4th (2:05 slower than handicap time; 0:50 behind leader)
Carol 37:48, 39:49*, 4th (2:05 slower than handicap time; 0:50 behind leader)
Diane 36:08, 41:16, 6th (5:08 slower than handicap time; 3:54 behind leader)
*this finish time is approximated from Nancy's, as the time Carol gave me (39:39
for her, 39:35 for Cindy) seemed off by about 10 seconds given the finish order
- OR the time Nancy gave me was off by 10 seconds the other way; it's pretty
close, though).
Point totals - winner of each race gets 10 points, 2nd = 9 pts, 3rd = 8 pts, down to 10th and subsequent = 1 pt. At the end of the season, the people w/the most points will get awards at our banquet in October :)!
So far:
10 pts = Tammy
9 pts = Boyd
8 pts = Nancy
7 pts (tie) = Cindy & Carol
6 pts = Diane
